GovernorHubbard appointed him as a judge in the State district court in 1878. He resigned due to poor health in the same year. He moved to Arizona in 1884 hoping the dry climate would improve his health, it didn't and He returned to Texas.

According to another biography (Wikipedia) Camp was also Colonel of the 10th Texas Cavalry. I cannot confirm this though as the article on the 10th Texas Cavalry has a colonel Matthew F. Locke as the only commander listed.
