Cairo War Correspondent. Name for a journalist who covered the war in the western theater mostly from the St. Charles Hotel near the telegraph office in Cairo, Illinois. The name was pinned on such journalists by New York Times correspondent, Frank B. Wilkie, who deplored the practice.

From: "The Language of the Civil War", by John D. Wright page 51.
