Hello, and thank you for adding me to the group. I have a 1st cousin 3x removed who was taken prisoner during the war and held at Cahaba Prison 12 miles south of Selma, Alabama. He survived, only to die aboard the Sultana on his way home. His body was never recovered.

I did presentations at our local Genealogy Society and Historical Society and was surprised so few knew of this prison or the Sultana. I'm curious if anyone here knows about this part of history or perhaps has a family member who was part of it also.

    Glad to have your company.

I assume you have Bryant's book on Cahaba and Sultana.

There are at least a coupla fairly recent threads on the Sultana Disaster. I went on a 9 day Civil War road trip in June. On the first day we stopped at The Sultana Disaster Museum in Marion, Arkansas and Memphis National Cemetery. Hundreds of casualties from The Sultana are buried as "Unknown Soldier" at the cemetery.

Cahaba had one of the lowest death rates of any Civil War prison and I agree that if you don't have William O. Bryant's Cahaba Prison and the Sultana Disaster, you should get it. I've given presentations on Cahaba and the Sultana to Roundtable groups, SCV and SUVCW Camps; it has gotten very positive responses and I agree that it is a subject that many people do not know about. Also, welcome to the group from the banks of the Cahaba River in Alabama.

Welcome From The Heart Of Dixie. Be sure to stop by the Weapons & Ammo and Uniforms & Relics forums. I live 35 miles from Cahaba and have been there many time and I'm very familiar with the prison and the Sultana disaster. IMHO it was greed that caused it.

    Welcome

I live in the same county that Memphis is located. I haven't been to the new museum for the Sultana, which is located across the river in Arkansas.
In my research on service records for various soldiers, I've had to check the list of casualties on a few occasions. Such a tragic event. It makes you wonder how could anyone be so stupid to think any river boat could carry that many people.

Welcome aboard. What a tragedy the Sultana was to have survived a prison camp only to be killed by an explosion aboard ship.

NOT representing the Sultana specifically, but appropriate, nonetheless; welcome to the forums!
