Victorians South and North were big on symbolism.

Here is a butternut section cut, said to be something a Confederate soldier would wear on a neck string or pinned to their uniform or hat to indicate the validity of secession and the Confederacy, i.e. "two nations in opposition yet hearts connected."

Notice the center of the nut where yes, it seems seem two hearts are opposed yet connected.

Charming idea if true ...anyone familiar with this?.

I've never heard of this either, unless it was worn as a secret identification mark by some copperhead organization in the North.

Even though used as a dye for Confederate uniforms,* I'm not seeing that the Butternut tree grows very far South, so perhaps this is a Virginia / Kentucky/ Tennessee / N. Carolina thing -- or a Copperhead "secret" symbol. Perhaps only ever a family story...thanks for considering it.
