Buford's Withdrawal

And people say "by the book" as if it was a bad thing. If that was "the book", it deserves far more respect than it gets.

Interesting article. I never realized there was so much strategy involved with Buford's stand. I've never felt Buford or Reynolds got the credit they deserved for Gettysburg.

It might be too much to say they won the battle, but they certainly made it possible for the Union to win by their considerably above average performance.

Am I the only one able to make the first article (on Buford's withdrawal) open? It does open as a word file, but it opens fine for me.

I think perhaps the greatest contribution Buford and Reynolds made was their coolness under fire. The last time the AoP faced ANV infantry was at Chancellorsville, and there the commanding officer "lost his nerve" and the army got shellacked. But Buford and Reynolds recognized defensible ground and defended it admirably.

To be honest, I didn't even try to open that Word document until now. (I'm always having compatibility issues on my setup.) But I just tried it and what do you know, it opens! No time to read it now, but I'll get to it...

Hoping to stimulate some thought in regards to this and the battle. I'm afraid I don't have much to say at the moment, but I think the article is worth reading to understand the battle a little better.

Thanks for the link, El. I was able to open it with no trouble, but I've just gotten home from work, haven't slept yet and will read it later. I do know that I take seriously any article by Wittenberg written about cavalry, especially Union cavalry. Heard him speak at the round table here in Evansville in '01 on that same subject, and he's a very credible source and researcher on that topic.
