Brown was not above getting physically involved in his beliefs. On August 26, 1856 he fought a duel with future Confederate Governor of Missouri Thomas C. Reynolds, then the St. Louis District Attorney on Bloody Island located in the middle of the Mississippi River over the slavery issue. Reynolds was unscathed, but Brown was shot in the leg and limped for the rest of his life.
