BRANFORD >> Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1885 was a school holiday in Branford. Workers from the Malleable Iron Fittings Company and the Branford Lock Works enjoyed a day off. A parade wound its way from the train depot to the Town Hall.

And then 13-year-old Georgie Barker, “tastefully dressed as a goddess of liberty,” stood on the slight rise between the Town Hall and the First Congregational Church and unveiled Branford’s Civil War Monument, according to Branford Town Historian Jane Bouley, who will be discussing her newly released “The Civil War Soldiers of Branford, Connecticut” at Lenny’s Indian Head Restaurant, Dec. 3.
