The original photo from which I cropped this detail on the left is from Mathew Brady's mid-July photograph showing two of his assistants sitting behind the Union breatworks occupied by Greene's Brigade during the fierce fighting July 2nd and 3rd. I focused on the area around the two men for my then and now because of the interesting comparisons to my modern photo on the right. The very stout earthworks are now seen as a small earthen mound. The tree seen in front of the assistant's knee survived until coming down in a storm a few years ago. As you see, the stump remains today. The sloped boulder occupied by the assistants remains today unchanged and the skinny sapling right behind the men is now a very large documented witness tree.
