“Stonewall Jackson’s father was a failed lawyer and compulsive gambler. His mother, Julia, taught school, sewed, and somehow managed to feed her two small children and infant. Her children were pitiable sights in town, wearing ragged clothes, and accepting charity from the local merchants and tradesmen.
“By the fall of 1831, there was so little money that Julia has to send away. Seven year old Tom, as he was known, was sent north with his sister, Laura, to live with relatives in Jackson’s Mill.
“Jackson was orphaned. His father died from typhoid fever and his mother died a few years later on 4 December 1831 while he was living with relatives.” - source: “Rebel Yell” by S. C. Gwynne, p. 137
