Yankee Hotel, a Story of Andersonville

Why was Andersonville chosen for the prison site? When General Bragg went to Richmond as the military advisor of Jefferson Davis, he instituted a rigid system of inspections. It was reported to him that the federal prisoners were not well fed because the food had to be transported over several hundred miles of railroad from southern Georgia. “Then, remove them to Georgia where the food is grown”. Dr. Samuel Hollingsworth Stout picked the location of Andersonville Prison. Yankee Hotel documents the growth of the prisoner population at Andersonville, based on newly discovered letters of prisoners and guards. During the short fourteen months that Andersonville Prison was open (February, 1864-April, 1865), almost 13,000 prisoners and nearly 300 prison guards died.

Join us on Friday, December 13, from 5:00-8:00 pm and on Saturday, December 14, from 2:00-5:00 pm as the authors of Yankee Hotel, Brad Quinlan and Mark Stibitz, and other historians take you through the stories from the prisoner and guard letters and the documents of the prison’s history. Brad Quinlan is a multi-book author and renowned historian on the Civil War. See a rare hand painted photograph of a Union Prisoner from Andersonville, restored and framed by the Avery Gallery, and other relics from Andersonville Prison. Come have your copy of the book autographed by the authors!
