Hello forum! This last year I read Staking Claims to a Continent: John A. Macdonald, Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and the Making of North America by James Laxer. While it was an interesting read, I found it was horrendously low on content on the nation state project, its purpose and why it failed.

Essentially I'm looking for some book recomendations on the rise and fall of the Confederacy and its internal politics. Anyone able to help a curious Canuck out?

Look Away! by William C. Davis is an excellent read. So is Stephanie McCurry's book. The others I haven't read. I tried to read Jefferson Davis's magnum opus and couldn't make it all the way through it. I have it on my list to give it another try in 2019.

Jefferson Davis, Confederate President: Herman Hattaway and Richard Beringer

Southern Invincibility: A History of the Confederate Heart: Wiley Sword

@CanadianCanuck, I've got books that while taking a decade prior to the Civil War in 1861-1865 they do cover Northern AND Southern politics as well as the politicians in these areas some of whom would go on to be part of the civil war specifically in the 1849-1850 legislative debates and the Texas-New Mexico boundary dispute that almost led to the former state sending its troops to the latter state and fighting the United States military garrison thus causing civil war, it's all in these books right there specifically the former two and parts of it in the latter two:
America's Great Debate by Fergus M. Bordewich
Texas, New Mexico, and the Compromise of 1850 by Mark J. Steigmeier
On the Brink of Civil War by John C. Waugh
Prologue to Conflict by Holman Hamilton
The Fate of their Country, The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party and The Political Crisis of the 1850s by Michael F. Holt
