This is a fascinating look at American History that few take time to explore. The bonds between southern families and their servants/allies are not easily understood, especially by one unfamiliar with the region's history. The greatest injustice to the colored race has been to suppress their role in the WBTS. Yes, blacks who served in the Northern Army get recognition, but the men of color who fought for the South have been forgotten. They didn't exist to the northern writers of history.

Fredrick Douglas, 1861:
There are at the present moment, many colored men in the Confederate Army doing duty not only as cooks, servants, and laborers, but as real soldiers, having musket on their shoulders and bullets in their pockets, ready to shoot down loyal troops and do all that soldiers may do to destroy the Federal government and build up that of the traitors and rebels.
From "The Sable Arm: Negro Troops in the Union Army, 1861-1865." Dudley Taylor Cornish.

New Bern Weekly Press, Aug 13, 1861:
The war has dispelled one delusion of the abolishnists. The Negroes regard them as enemies instead of friends. No insurrection has occurred in the South-- no important stampede of slaves has evinced their desire for freedom. On the contrary, they have jeered at and insulted our troops, have readily enlisted in the rebel army and on Sunday, at Manassas, shot down our men with as much alacrity as if abolitionism had never existed.

And someone mentioned that Black folks weren't Southern?!

Happy New Year, all!
