I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but here it goes . I am looking for a recommendation for a book on gear and equipment used by the soldiers with lots of pictures showing the type of gear used and details . Most of the info I have found is a bit limited in maybe showing a picture and then saying this is the cartridge pouch . Would like to find out more on what the cavalry troopers carried . The differences between cartridge pouches , belts , holsters , slings , uniforms , firearms . All that stuff a history nerd likes to see .

Found a copy of "Echoes of Glory" on ebay and ordered it for $10 . Was looking and found a copy of Randy Steffen 1851-1880 for $30 but will wait and see what the Time Life book is like before ordering Randy Steffen's book since it is a bit higher .

The very best source I have is American Military Equipage 1851-1872 by Frederick P. Todd. These came in a three volume set and reprinted in a two volume set. They can be a bit expensive so you can see if a library in your are have copies of them.

You can go with the three volume set of The Fighting Men of the Civil War by William c. Davis. These are colorful and sow a lot of uniforms and equipment but are short on details. The good news is these are inexpensive and you might get them at friends of the Library book rooms or thrift shops for $1 -$4. It might take you some time to find all three books.

I have a vast personal reference library with books on Union uniforms, Union headwear etc.. You can post questions in the Uniforms & Relics forum. You can also send me a private message (PM) and I can see what information I have on a subject.

THe Echos of Glory books are very good . Lots of pictures . I also picked up History of the U.S. Cavalry and one that more on the weapons side called Weapons of the Civil War which are informative as well . I can't remember the writers names and I am away from home so can't check . I meant to say something a while back but hey I am getting older !!!
