Natalie St. Martin was born into an affluent Catholic Creole family in the city of New Orleans she married Judah Benjamin when she was 16, who would figure greatly in the Confederacy. They were married on February 12, 1833 in the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. There was an agreement made as Judah was of the Jewish faith that any children their union might produce would be raised Catholic.
They initially lived in a Mansion located at a New Orleans sugar plantation called Bellechasse. They also owned a townhouse in the French Quarter.
Natalie was not interested in her husbands political life. As time went on and Judah became more involved in politics, their marriage started to show the effects of his being away so much of the time.
After 15 years of marriage Natalie packed up their only child, a daughter named Ninette, and went to Paris, leaving Judah in the mansion. There she lived quite lavishly as she had always spent a great deal of money on material things. She also allegedly was involved in numerous affairs. There was never a divorce, and Judah did attempt to make a yearly trip to Paris to visit them.
After the Civil War, Judah moved to London, and visited his wife and daughter in France more often.
Judah and Natalie are buried together in a cemetery in Paris, France.
