During Judah Benjamin's tenure as a U.S. Senator in the 1850's, he and Benjamin Wade of Ohio had the following exchange.

Wade, referring to Benjamin's religion and the issue of slavery, called him "a Hebrew with Egyptian principles."

To which Benjamin replied, "It is true that I am a Jew, and when my ancestors were receiving their Ten Commandments from the immediate Deity, amidst the thundering and lightnings of Mt. Sinai, the ancestors of my opponent were herding swine in the forests of Great Britain."
