Benjamin Harrison was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 23rd President of the United States from 1889 to 1893. Harrison was born in the Village of North Bend, Ohio. He was a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, creating the only grandfather-grandson duo to have held the office. He was also the great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison V, a founding father. Before ascending to the presidency, Harrison established himself as a prominent local attorney, Presbyterian church leader, and politician in Indianapolis, Indiana. During the American Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a colonel, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a brevet brigadier general of volunteers in 1865. Harrison unsuccessfully ran for governor of Indiana in 1876. The Indiana General Assembly elected Harrison to a six-year term in the U.S. Senate, where he served from 1881 to 1887. Harrison died in his Indianapolis home on March 13th, 1901.

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, previously known as the Benjamin Harrison Home, was the home of the Twenty-third President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison. It is in the Old Northside Historic District of Indianapolis, Indiana. Harrison had the sixteen-room house with its red brick exterior built in the 1870s. It was from the front porch of the house that Harrison instituted his famous Front Porch Campaign in the 1888 United States Presidential Campaign, often speaking to crowds on the street. In 1896, Harrison renovated the house and added electricity. He died there in a second story bedroom in 1901. Today it is owned by the Arthur Jordan Foundation and operated as a museum to the former president by the Benjamin Harrison Foundation.

Benjamin Harrison was born on this day in 1833 in the Village of North Bend, Ohio. North Bend is just west of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio and 5 miles east of the Indiana border.

Harrison was not just the Grandson of a President but also the son of a member of the US House of Representatives. So there were three generations before him that served the country in a remarkable and broad manner

He attended the iconic and beautiful Miami University in Oxford Ohio. There , he met is wife, the daughter of a Presb. minister and it was there that his life long faith in Jesus Christ was rooted. Harrison's and his wife had two children, a boy and a girl. While in office, his wife died. Of note is that Harrisons voice is the first voice ever recorded on a crude early phonograph. You can hear it id you visit the Harrison home.
Harrison defeated Grover Cleveland the then sitting President. Four years later, Cleveland defeated Harrison to become the only US President to serve a split term. After his Presidency, Harrison returned to Indianapolis to practice law. Think of this today ---that a former President would return to civil life to the active practice of law.
After his beloved first wife died, he married his niece of more than twenty five years his junior to the dismay of both his daughter and son. (General Longstreet anyone?)
The children broke the relationship off with their father, claiming that their cousin was only after his money. As the years unfolded this proved to be untrue and the second Mrs. Harrison was a devoted wife to the end. She and the President had a daughter that became an accomplished national figure. Harrisons daughter by wife #1 , when learning that her father was dying made the trip to Indiana. Alas, he died shortly before she arrived reminding families that reconciliation should be made before sundown.
If you ever have an hour or more to visit the Harrison home you must do so. It's simply remarkable and the guides are exceptional. By the way- at the end of his life Harrison said his crowing achievement was not the Presidency but being a General in the war.

I read somewhere that 6 Union Officers became president and Harrison was one of them. It was also stated that Harrison was such disciplinarian that his men disliked him.
