His 12th Tennessee was so depleted that it was merged with the 22nd Tennessee in May of 1862 He led this regiment until it was again merged or consolidated with the 47th Tennessee on October 30, 1862.

1865: Brigadier General of Confederate Army Cavalry
His biography is a great book to add to your library.
General Forrest picked Col Bell to return to West Tennessee to gather up the bands of cavalry and also recruit new ones. He was given a staff to help. General Forrest joined him early in December 1863 and they brought out these recruits as well as cattle and hogs. See my post “Forrest’s Cattle Raid”.

What was the story about his promotion to General? I thought he didnt get it approved but that was Robert McCulloch. His may have been approved in March or April 1865. (I dont have my book with me).

From that raid and Bell’s recruiting efforts, four or five Tennessee cavalry regiments were formed. Soon Forrest had rebuilt his cavalry division taken away by Bragg.

Mine (book) states his promotion was on Febuary 28, 1865.
