Here's the picture of the musket hammer I dug a few weeks ago. I wanted to share with the group the result of cleaning with vinegar.

Here it is cleaned up. I've discovered that soaking the really stubborn rusty relics like this one works well with the vinegar bath.
 
I have started using vinegar now for all my iron. The results are controllable and it sure cleans the iron well.
How is your hunting going at your site? Found anything lately?
 
That's terrific! It would be helpful if there were a list of different cleaning substances and techniques used for the various relics dug up, or un-dug for that matter.
Pretty much lead and brass should be cleaned with just soap and water. It's just the iron that can be tricky. I've used electrolysis and the vinegar and I'm very impressed with the results I'm getting with the vinegar.
