According to one site the photo was an 1853 image taken by none other then Matthew Brady. Possibly it's his old uniform. He was at VMI as an instructor and that was the year he was married.
I don't see that as an actual picture taken by Brady, it looks too airbrushed, you know what I mean? The same goes for Rosecrans' portrait too, how come?
