Early in the Civil War H. Hallock was providing the State of Michigan small numbers of beaver coats for military use. I take it these were for use by sentries during cold weather. It would seem like beaver coats would be too heavy to wear while marching. Would it be safe to assume the beaver coats would be of "civilian" style? Does anyone have information source for describing beaver military coats form this era?

Hmm. Maybe I believe too much of what comes out of Hollywood but I thought a few movies depicted soldiers wearing fur coats during post Civil War period. If these fur coats were issued in the 1880's, I would assume they developed them from earlier designs. So maybe there would be some similarity to the ones issued by Hallock.

I know buffalo coats were used in the post Civil War era. Perhaps a beaver coat would be basically the same.
