Longstreet’s first real war experience came during the Mexican War where he was recognized for bravery. From 1846 to 1848 he rendered distinguished service in some of that war's most important battles including Vera Cruz, Churubusco, and Chapultapec, where he was wounded. Following the close of the conflict, he participated in the Indian Wars, rising to the rank of major by 1858.

He carried this regimental flag as a young lieutenant during the storming of Churubusco in 1847.

Serving in the 8th U.S. Infantry, Longstreet and the regiment served in Texas and Northern Mexico before being transferred to participate in Scott`s landing at Veracruz and the march to Mexico City. Cullum includes Longstreet for, beside the already posted ones, Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterrey (not the one at Monterey), Veracruz, Cerro Gordo, San Antonio and Molino del Ray.
