In an effort to stop a 100-unit subdivision from being developed on historic lands, a national organization is asking for help from private donors.

The land in question, about 50 acres off Crawford Road near the Colonial National Historical Park in York County, played a role in both the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War, according to the American Battlefield Trust, the nonprofit organization working to preserve the land.

Colonial National Historical Park. Schemmer said if the trust is able to purchase the land, it will eventually be added to the park.

Work on collecting money to buy the property started in April 2015. The bulk of the money already received, $3.6 million, comes from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation by way of Dominion Energy, which donated funds to offset impacts from a high-voltage power line going across the James River from Surry County to James City County.
