Special to the Register

An Irish immigrant who commanded a division at the Battle of Richmond in 1862, where he was wounded, died 150 years ago Sunday during the Battle of Franklin, Tenn.

Confederate Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne fought with distinction at Richmond and in the battles of Murfreesboro (Tenn.), Chickamauga (Ga.), Missionary Ridge (Tenn.) and the Atlanta campaign.

Just as they did when they invaded Kentucky in 1862, the Confederates hoped to turn the tide of war after a major defeat by launching a counter attack deep into Union held territory.

The late 1864 invasion of Tennessee culminated in the Battle of Franklin, which turned into a disaster for the Confederates. Along with Cleburne, five other Confederate generals were killed at Franklin. Seven were wounded and one was captured.
