Only a small fight but interesting for as the scene of the first naval officer killed in the CW, the notable officer present was Daniel Ruggles of Shiloh fame.
James H. Ward was a notable casualty. He was among the forward-thinking naval officers of the day and a writer besides (I have a copy of his Steam for the Million, which is a great 1850s-vintage "Steam Propulsion for Dummies"); one might have expected that, surviving the war, he might have been in on the foundation of the Naval War College along with Stephen B. Luce.
