The Battle of Kettle Run took place on Aug 27, 1862 between Gen Hooker's Division and elements of General Ewell's Division. During the action Hooker personally took charge of the 6th and 7th NJ regiments and led them off to left to flank Ewell's position. During this an orderly of Hooker's was hit. Priv Emmell 7th NJ wrote, "I see a horse killed with solid shot and his rider's leg taken off, the man was an orderly to Gen Hooker..." My question is 'Does anyone know the name of the orderly?" Supposely Hooker turned and called out, "Quick bring me another orderly!" but doesn't mention the incident in his report.
My second question concerns losses to the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th NJ during the fighting. The after action reports seem to lump Kettle Run losses in with 2nd Bull Run. Of the 4 regiments the 8th NJ must have taken the most casualties as it was pinned down along with the 2nd NY in the open in front of Ewell's line.
