We all know that the Union and the Confederacy had different names for the same battle. But then we have nicknames for a few battles. For example:

"The Battle that Saved Washington"
"The Battle Above the Clouds"

Anyone that wants to can add additional battle nicknames.

When was "The Battle Above the Clouds" first used? I was wondering if some clever author just made up a name and that name then became so well known at over time it associated with the battle.

Seems “battle above the clouds” must have come fairly early on. On Chronicling America I just found it called by that name (although without capital letters) in a Dec 1, 1863 article referencing the NYT already having called it by that name.

They quote Meigs with it.
