This particular monument is obviously a general memorial to the Civil War itself, but it focuses on the West Point cadets who fell in battle and more specifically it does exclude Confederate veterans. It is unquestionably an Union memorial. Its still a relatively impressive one. Its tall, it has a copper statue perched atop a relatively tall Doric column that is polished and overall it was placed at Trophy Point overlooking perhaps the most popular spot at West Point.
The Statue, "Fame" actually the second iteration, the first iteration was apparently too large and awkward and was replaced with this. The old joke is when an underclassmen is asked by an upperclassmen: "How are they all?": "They are all fickle but one, sir." "Who is the one?" "She who stands atop Battle Monument, for she has been on the same shaft since 1897."
My son, its important for me to bring my children to these places even though they're not quite old enough to understand much.
