One small addendum: when Company C of the 3rd US was established as a horse artillery unit in 1838 and command was given to Captain Samuel Ringgold, Barry was assigned to the 3rd to assist Ringgold. Barry's efforts were so appreciated by Ringgold that he asked Barry to transfer permanently to the 3rd but Barry declined and returned to the 2nd.

As you indicate, he was one of the three co-authors of the official "Instruction" manual adopted by the War Department in 1861 (although it appears that Hunt did most of the writing).
