Pre-War Profession Businessman, Graduated West Point 1829, instructor at West Point, resigned US Army 1836, civil engineer on railroads.
War Service July 1861 Col. of 18th Massachusetts, Washington defences, Peninsula campaign, commanded 1st bde/1st Divn/V Corps, Antietam, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, commanded the division at Gettysburg (w), garrison and prison duty.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. March 13 1865.
Post War Career US Commission on building the Union Pacific Railroad.
