Be a 30 year old Frenchman, Jules Verne did not serve in the American Civil War, but he did use some fictional Civil War soldiers and civilians in some of his novels. The main character in The Blockade Runner is a Southerner. In Texar's Revenge, or, North Against South, Burbank is a abolitionist Northerner living in Florida and is the bitter enemy of Texar. In Mysterious Island the main characters are escaped Union prisoners. In From the Earth to the Moon the "Baltimore Gun Club" had little to do after the Civil War and decide to construct a big cannon to fire a projective to the moon.

Although all the characters a fictional they do give some insight in the how, at least one Frenchman, viewed the Civil War. One could also speculate that to sell books, Verne played to the accepted views of Frenchmen about the American Civil War.
