In my obsession with all things Franco-Prussian war, another of my lovely Austrian arms is up for sale to free up funds. This is a very rare all original Muster 1840 smoothbore musket with the rare original ramrod. This one is dated 1849, about the time the Austrians were dealing with Hungarian uprisings and war with Piedmont. Please see below for condition and additional details.
$1650 shipped, open to offers. Also happy to trade for any variant of the Prussian Dreyse, depending on model and condition would be willing to add $ to the trade. The System Augustin uses a copper or brass tube instead of a percussian cap that is struck by a free-floating firing pin when the hammer drops. Mechanically in excellent condition.
The middle barrel and is free floating and kept in place by sling, not sure why the Austrians did not use a band spring there. The ramrod is designed to be used from both sides, to reduce the amount of time it takes to load a musket. Has a tang mounted rear sight like the Prussian 1809/31.
I have made my own copper tubes based on videos from Capenball Youtube channel, filled with toy gun paper caps, and it works just like to original tubes. The buyer will get all my premade empty tubes. The stock is in great condition, free of cracks and appears to be original finish. There a few dings from general wear. The metal has been cleaned, mostly grey. Most of the metal surfaces have old corrosion freckling with light pitting on the iron parts. The lock and tubelock have a a nice patina with imperial Eagle and year of manufacture. Smoothbore .70 caliber is free of pitting and some brightness to it. I used .660 balls wrapped in paper cartridge. Its a head turner at the range. The sling is actually a British type repro, not sure if anyone makes Austrian musket repro slings. Feel free to contact me for additional pics or more info.
