On Sunday, August 9, 1863 Lincoln, accompanied by his secretary, John Hay, visited Alexander Gardner's new gallery. Six photographs were taken. For three of the poses Gardner used a four lens camera that produced four images on a single plate at once. The negative could be used to print four cartes-de-visite or, by combining horizontal pairs, two stereoviews. Although the negatives no longer survive, the resulting prints remain for us to enjoy.
