I've heard mention of this before. The Harrisburg Patriot (4 Feb. 1864), includes the following note:

With a half dozen balls rammed on top of the powder, the shooter is very lucky the thing didn't go off. The direction of the explosion would not likely be in out the barrel.

That has been stated many,many times over the years about up to 10 balls in a rifle.
