Just learned U.S. Quartermaster General, Montgomery Meigs, (a southerner) played a critical role in developing Arlington National Cemetery during the war. It was Meigs who decided to use Robert E. Lee's home as site.

His son was the first to be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery and I think it is buried close to Lee's home.

His son John Rodgers Meigs is buried at Arlington but he was not first. As a matter of fact Montgomery had him buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington and then later had him moved to Arlington and their graves are next to each other.

You are correct. Thanks.

He was killed on a farm just outside a small village of Dayton, Va. when he ran into some Confederate Scouts.
