When pecan pies were first made is not certain and several theories of the origin pecan pie exists. Some claim that the French started making pecan pies soon after settling in New Orleans, but this theory lacks concrete evidence. Some claim that pecan pies were being made in Alabama in the early 1800s. Again there appears to be a lack of evidence. The first known recipe for pecan pie was published in Harper's Bazaar in 1888. So 1888 is the earliest we can be sure pecan pies were being made. Pecan pies possibly could have been made before and during the Civil War. but perhaps pecan pie is a post Civil War thing. It was not until the 1920s that pecan pies were widely popular. The rules of this forum is 19th Century period foods (and earlier) only, so pecan pie discussions may or may not be against the rules.
