Are dogs good judges of character?

he and my daughter haven't been apart since except for short periods. I honestly don't know what she will do when he dies :frown: It's a fact they have a tendency to get in between people! And it's nice to know yours came looking for you after making a pretense of having a problem with the stairs ... just try and tell me dogs aren't intelligent :smoke:
What a great story !

And I'll say again ... some dogs are smarter than many of us.

A Chihuahua is probably the best protective dog of all time.

What they lack in size, is more than compensated by their fiery disposition.
I've watched much larger breeds turn away from an upset Chihuahua.

I've always been a "dog guy" myself, but for some reason ... Chihuahuas and me have never gotten along.

Mine tried to attack the neighbor's Angus bull once. Fortunately the bull didn't notice him before I chased him down.

I think Chihuahuas just tend to not like people they don't know. Mine remembers people he liked when he was a puppy--he loves my mechanic!--but otherwise he is pretty grumpy about new people. Unless I warn people that he will be grumpy. Then he is super friendly! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

hope the moderators will excuse the fact that this illustration depicts a scene long after the war (1894).
I think the moderators welcome such images.
They have enough to monitor as it is ...

I loved this 1890's image !

I laughed at the artist's depiction of the empty bottles at the tipsy young lady's feet.
No wonder her dog was becoming defensive !

This is Fang when he was just a few months old. His paws probably give an idea of the size of him now he is 2yrs old.

I'll see if I can get a more recent pic of him :dog:

He looks very serious ... even at his young age.

Thanks @7th Mississippi Infantry . This one is my son's dog, but as you said about Chihuahua's my other daughter is very well protected by a much smaller dog!

Here is the eldest with him, and a nice pic from when my son had him on a walk.

One Chihuahua can be a real handful and I’ve got four of them, they are very protective and extremely territorial. The upside is that living with chihuahuas provides moments of comedy gold, my two youngest chihuahuas are parkour specialists. There’s nothing they can’t climb or jump from. Their favourite party piece is to run full speed onto a rug and come to a sudden halt, the joy on their faces as they skid across the room is something to behold.

Talking of Chihuahuas...

The cats in my own home will often crowd around me as well. They mustn't know that I'm generally not a fan, but that's probably because of attitudes while I was growing up.
Consider yourself quite fortunate: cats are notorious for picking out the one person who doesn't care for them--and then climbing all over them! 😂

At the humane society where I volunteered for several years, the chihuahua was considered the "most likely to bite the vet". They're feisty little dogs but don't have a reputation to match because few are willing to complain to the police that they were attached by their neighbor's chihuahua. But other dogs know! They are not only very protective but they have absolutely no idea that they are so little.

What a handsome member of your family !

He looks like he's happy to be a part of the @Cavalry Charger household.

And while there's no doubt he is happy to meet new visitors to your home ( it's his too, :bounce:) he also looks like he wouldn't tolerate any nonsense.

So true !

I never hated cats, but they were not my favorite pets.

Long story short, one stray cat started to like me before I even fed her.

Then I watched her kill a snake and two squirrels.

I hired her on the spot ... even without a follow-up interview.

:smile coffee:

kill a snake and two squirrels.
I don't hate squirrels either.
They are very cute little animals and fun to watch.

But for those that don't live with the little things, they are not the brightest.
They think nothing about chewing into electrical wires.

When that happens, there are two results:
The little critters "fry" on the spot ... and I'm without power for a day or two.

Sorry to go off topic.

Now back to " are dogs good judges of character" ?

My little terrier thinks that squirrels are extremely dangerous. He spends a great deal of his time outside making sure that they don't set foot in the yard. Of course, he's never actually caught one but they scatter when he comes running and barking. ☺️

It's so funny watching dogs react to squirrels.
Many dogs go "all out" to fight them. But most times, the squirrels will laugh and then climb a tree in about three seconds.

The dogs then become frustrated ... and proceed to bark all night.

But I've also watched some dogs become scared to death if a little squirrel appears in their yard.

He's a big goof who's very friendly, but there was one occasion when I was home on my own after dark and he stood at the corner of the house out the back stock still, and growling menacingly at something I couldn't see. He had never done that before, or since. He was on high alert for some reason and I realized he had that protective instinct in him. Whatever was around the corner wasn't coming any closer. And to this day I don't know what it was, but he kept it at bay. Fang's spidey senses were tingling!

Too cool again !

That's one of many reasons I love dogs !

They are like us in many respects.
While they all have individual personalities, every dog I've known has always been loyal to
the humans that take care of em'.

I say again ... dogs truly are "man's best friend" .

Buy Fang a new toy ... and rub his belly .

:D
