Hi,
Does anyone recognize this image and/or individuals in the photo? The photo is by I. H. Bonsall who followed the 14th Corps. It was in an album with a few other ordinary images from Kentucky. There is a handwritten date of May 3rd 1864 on the back.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I am still looking. Did find other photos by him. He was the Army Photographer for the Army of the Cumberland. He was born in 1833 in Ohio. He was a photographer in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began as photographer for Army September, 1862. He apprenticed under Matthew Brady. His initial duties were to photograph maps at their headquarters in Cincinnati, but he later traveled with the army to Tennessee, broadening his subject matter to include portraiture and war-related landscape along the way. During the Union siege of Chattanooga, in 1863, he spent time photographing the areas surrounding nearby battle sites. It appears he went on to Georgia.
After the War, he did have photographic studio in Cincinnati. I have him there until 1870. After that all I have is his death date of 1909.
Need to see where the Army of Cumberland was in May 1864. That could be clue as to photo. Do know the 14th Corps was in Georgia at that time. The commanding officer of the 14th was General John M. Palmer, his dates Oct.28. 1863 to August 7, 1864.
The album had just a few ordinary cabinet cards and cdvs from Kentucky...no IDs except for a death card for Dr. W. D. Murrah who died on March 12, 1896.

Regimental history states: "March to Charleston April 18-26. Atlanta (Ga.) Campaign May to September. Demonstrations on Rocky Faced Ridge and Dalton May 5-13." Maybe picture was taken of officers/ staff before they left Charleston?
