Days before the Assassination Lincoln was talking to Sherman and was on If the army should pursue and capture Davis?
Lincoln replied with: "That reminds me of story, and related a tale about a man who had taken a pledge against drinking. The man, said Lincoln, was offered a drink at a friend's house. The man declined, on account of his pledge, so his friend offered him lemonade instead. Then the host mentioned that the lemonade would be a bit more palatable if he were to pour some brandy in it. The man said that if his host were to do that unbeknownst to him, then he would not object." Sherman understood that Davis should be left to leave the country and not to be seen again. When Davis heard about the Assassination he stated: "I certainly have no special regard for Mr. Lincoln; but there are a great many men of whose end I would much rather have heard than his. I fear it will be disastrous to our people, and I regret it deeply."
