A friend of mine sent me pictures of the watch shown here, which he currently has for sale. It is an N Size (approximately 19 Size) E. Howard Company Model 1871 ("Series IV") watch in an original 18K gold case manufactured circa 1871-72. Howard watches were expensive, high-end luxury watches. This example probably retailed for approximately $200. The inscription, which I judge to be very likely authentic, on the interior of the front lid identifies it as a watch purchased by a Union Ensign, James Hariman, with the prize money he received from the capture of the CSS Tennessee during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.
