An Incident of the Battle of Chancellorsville
William C. Meffert (1842-1918) was 19 years old when he left Dodgeville to join Co. H of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry. He fought at the battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Atlanta and took part in Sherman's March to the Sea. This 8-page pamphlet recalls an incident at Chancellorsville when the rank and file spontaneously charged without orders into a larger Confederate force and captured it. He describes how two of his friends were wounded, left on the field for 12 days, separated when captured, and reunited 40 years later in Wisconsin.
