Many here, I'm sure, are already familiar with the painting above entitled "Martial Law" (AKA "Order No. 11") by George C. Bingham, which depicts the effects Order #11 had on several Missouri counties after it was issued by General Thomas Ewing, Jr. in 1863.

In 1871, after receiving criticism from opponents to his artwork, George Bingham published the following 16 page response. In it he includes examples of some of the events which first inspired him to create it.
