"American Brutus" by William Kaufman offers new insight into John Wilkes Booth and his plots to first kidnap and then assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The book is filled with new information about Booth and his co-onspirators. While Booth was the mastermind, he clearly wove others into his plotting and intrigues. Readers will learn a great deal of interesting information, such as a week before the assassination Booth visited a friend at the Petersen House across from Ford's Theater. His friend was out so Booth waited for him in his room lying across the same bed that Lincoln was laid out on two weeks later. From Booth's diaries, readers will learn that Booth soon himself as playing the role of Brutus to kill the evil emperor who took too much power into his hands. The book is fascinating and explored the full scope of the planning, execution of the assassination and the military efforts to capture the perpetrators after the crime.
