America Flirted with Legalized Prostitution During the Civil War

What exactly does this post have to do with the topic of: America Flirted with Legalized Prostitution During the Civil War...Based on yesterday's exchange, I was under the impression you were a stickler for staying on topic.

It doesn't. I'm caught. Sorry.

So, I guess now Northern use of Prostitutes was caused by the South. It was Tennessee's fault, Prostitution exploded during the War, because of Northern Occupation? The Length some go to blame the whole mess on the South. Guess it was the Souths fault, Northerners, Dropped Their Pants. LOL

What is EMBARRASSING is those who have such a Bigotry of anything Southern and for anything about the Civil War, They can't understand.

Those who spend all their time, trying to Butcher Southern History, should spend a little time studying their own. You might be surprised at what Influence, Slavery, Slave Trading, had on the North. The Slave Trade continued thru the War and was principled in NYC. 1.6 million were trafficked. Along with Coolies to Peru and Cuba. So, NYC Harbor would be a good Monument to Slavery.

Frustration noted.

I don't believe there is, nor has there ever been, a Federal prohibition of prostitution. It has always been left up to state and local legislation. Prostitution has been legal somewhere in the U.S.A. just about from the beginning. As it is today in parts of Nevada.

During the antebellum period reformers had a hard time combating it because of the widespread belief that, as wicked as it was, prostitution helped protect "good girls" from the attentions of predacious males (who, of course, were incapable of resisting their "urges").

Sigh. Yes and interestingly the men escaped unscathed. Era newspapers can be a little infuriating. Under the ' arrests ' section, bawdy house busts included the names of allllll the women arrested and just the fact a few men were there. Nameless men, poor guys, guiltless citizens who probably just made a wrong turn and ended up there by accident.

But of course! Men are to be pitied for their affliction, and one might turn a blind eye when they succumb to irresistible temptation.
Women are just wicked.

Your reply does not make sense. I merely asked @uaskme where in his referenced article is race mentioned in regards to the Union Armies policy regarding the treatment of prostitutes. So far @uaskme as not responded. How did I make an unreasonable request?
I merely pointed out all major American cities had significant prostitution during g the ACW especially Richmond and New Orleans plus NYC. How is that a false statement?

In midsummer of 1863, elements of the Nashville press urged civil and military authorities to do something about the scandalous women who were ruining the health of so many soldiers. The complaints of Union officers and righteous citizens attracted the attention of the commanding general of the Department of the Cumberland who demanded the adoption of a plan to deal with the problem. The Nashville post commander decided to banish the prostitutes. In early July, army patrols began rounding up licentious females in order to put them aboard steamers and sent them North. Within a few days, the patrols corralled some three hundred of them, and they expected to collect another one hundred and fifty.

Although the press praised the plan, and even suggested the military should do more to restore Nashville's good order and security, the deportation scheme ran into problems. Since the army limited the plan to white women, some people feared black strumpers would quickly replace the WHITE ONES.

We have discussed this before. Blacks could not get a pass to go North.

Well at least you cited a source although it was not in the referenced article. Has we know the above plan failed so the Union Army did the more sensible plan of medically certification of prostitutes to ensure that they are not transmitting STD's at least per the medical standards of the times.
Not seeing the argument that such a policy is inferior to the Confederate Army policy which has far has we know their doctors did not examine prostitutes to ensure the safety of Confederate soldiers. Soldiers will seek solace where they can . Women forced by war to feed their children without the support of their menfolk be they North or South often had no choice but to become prostitutes. Not understanding the argument that somehow the Confederacy is morally superior in this regard.

The U S Army controlled Nashville. This was during the War.

Overshadowing all these problems was a much larger one: there was no place to unload the prostitutes. The steamer with its feminine cargo went to Louisville, but authorities there refused to accept any such commercial articles. The boat pushed on to Cincinnati, but the thought of hundreds of whores flooding the city appalled the city fathers there, too, and they rejected the cargo. In the end, the secretary of war intervened and directed the steamer to return to Nashville where its human cargo once again prowled the streets.

Sickness in the army garrison increased at once, and the old complaints were renewed. Provost Marshal George Spaulding of the Eighteenth Michigan Infantry devised a new scheme for controlling prostitution: rather than abolish it, the army would license it. Spaulding proposed that prostitutes be compelled to report to a medical officer for an examination. If free of venereal disease, the woman would pay a license fee and submit to periodic medical examinations, but if a woman was diseased or became diseased, she would be sent to a special army hospital for rehabilitation before being permitted to return to work. The money collected from license and examination fees would support the hospital, as well as another facility for diseased soldiers. They army's new program went into effect in the fall of 1863 when authorities obtained an old brick building in a secluded part of the city and converted it into an examination room and hospital "for the reception of valetudinarian females from the unhealthy purlieus of Smokey. pp130-131 Treason must be made Odious by Maslowski

General Spaulding was absolutely correct in what he did. The US Army undertook similar measures in future wars. What did the Confederate Army due to curtail STDs in its ranks?

Never said it was in the Article.

Never said Confederates were morally superior. Morally Superior argument is yours and your Single Causer Friends. However, Nashville didn't cause this explosion of Prostitution. This was a U S ARMY problem. If the White Woman had been Rebels, they would not of gone North.

I was just going by your comment of " Godless Northeners". How are women "Rebels". Sherman had no problem sending women from Roswell,Georgia North to seek gainful employment.

Sherman wanted to depopulate the South Of Southerners. No, the US Army didn’t charge the Prostitutes for Treason. I guess they Valued their Service to the Union. Southerners the Federals didn't want were banned to the South. You had to have a pass to go to Nashville.

Sherman did no such thing as "depopulate the South". Sending 200 or so destitute women to the North is not depopulation. Why would a prostitute be tried for treason? Southerners in liberated areas were allowed to work in the North. Regulating the size of an occupied city makes sense to prevent over crowding or people who are known to sympathise with the Confederacy.
Prostitutes served both sides although as the war progressed Union soldiers would be the preferred client as they paid in real money.

Sherman wanted to depopulate the South Of Southerners.
What evidence is there for this? The only Southerners that I am aware of who were removed by the military were POWs and 400 Roswell, Georgia mill workers. It is worth remembering that Northerners widely criticized Sherman's action at the time.

You seems to have pretty strange assumption of what is "depopulate".

While it was probably technically feasible to remove 5 millions of white Southern population elsewhere (where exactly?), the scale of the logistical problem would be enormous. There were some large-scale deportation of national minorities in our (Russian) history - like during & after World War 2 - but nothing on such scale. Considering the limits of the logistic available to mid-XIX century USA (and need to put all those peoples you removed somewhere else), it is highly improbable that Sherman might actually suggest anything like that, except as a joke.

He depopulated 400 or so Textile Workers from Marietta, GA. Young Woman. North depopulated a large section of MO. Sherman floated the idea. Might of been on one of his Psychological Breaks? We will never know. Suspect he was talking about Southerners in his way? Also charged them with Treason. He must of felt Threatened by these young Ladies.

...Depopulate means "remove the whole population from some place". Edited.

Nothing of this scale was ever performed against Southern population of America.
