He is my 4th cousin 8x removed. My 6th great grandfather was Robert Pendleton Steenbergen. His grandmother was Isabelle Pendleton. (my 8th great grandmother). Her brother John C Pendleton had a child named Robert E Pendleton. Who had a child named Edmund Pendleton II. Who then had a child who grew up to be Brigadier General William Nelson Pendleton. Who served as Robert E Lee's chief of artillery. He had a son....who grew up to be the famous Alexander Swift Pendleton. My 4th cousin 8x removed. Genealogy is so cool.

By all accounts read, 'Sandie' Pendleton was an exceptionally bright and very affable individual. He was also considered to be one of the finest and most promising young staff officers in the Army of Northern Virginia.

His service as Jackson's Assistant Adjutant General was indispensable in the running of Stonewall's headquarters. He was wounded at Fredericksburg which put him temporarily out of action for the day. After Jackson's death, Pendleton continued to serve capably as an Assistant Adjutant General under Ewell, until the latter was removed from Corps command at the end of May, 1864. When Early took over Corps command, Pendleton became his Chief of Staff and was promoted to the rank of L-C. (At the time, to his credit, Pendleton declined promotion to Brigade command because he believed he would be more useful doing the staff work).

While serving as Early's Adjutant General, Pendleton was mortally wounded at Fisher's Hill on Sept. 22, 1864. He died the following day, aged 23 years (and just short of his 24th. birthday).

The loss of Pendleton left a deep dent in the command structure of the II Corps.
