On Tuesday I was up in Albany right after the city got a foot of snow. I headed over to lovely Washington Park to take a few shots of the Grand Army of the Republic’s memorial to the soldiers and sailors who gave their lives in the Civil War.

Great photos of a beautiful monument! The snow really adds to the pictures!

The monument is oddly low key, given the enormous number of men New York state provided to the Union forces.

Compare with the grandiosity, for example, of the Soldiers & Sailors Arch in Brooklyn.
It is lower key and later than the Brooklyn monuments. Based on its location, it was meant to memorialize the city’s soldiers and sailors rather than the state’s.

The street next to the monument looks much as it did when the memorial was erected.

I grew up outside of Albany and there are neighborhoods in a lot of towns that look like that. I was born in Troy and spent some of my formative years in East Greenbush before moving to Balston Spa (birthplace of Abner Doubleday).
