The article is by Angela Esco Elder, the 2016-2017 Virginia Center for Civil War Studies postdoctoral fellow at Virginia Tech.
That was a good read. I cannot imagine being an orphaned child or war widow with multiple children after the war, especially in the South. Not that the grief of Union families was any less,but economic conditions were better.
