What would be the coating on the back of brass hooks of this us belt buckle

Just a guess. Maybe got coated when molten lead was poured

If it IS lead, you could test it by lightly rubbing a piece of paper over it. It would leave a mark on the paper. If you suspect lead, be careful how you handle it, and wash your hands before eating anything. Can't be too careful!
