Dr. Adalbert Voick was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1828. He was a man of many talents, including dentist, artist, , craftsman and a Confederate Civil War Cartoonist . He came to U.S. in 1848 and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1852. He established a dental practice in Baltimore. Among his professional accomplishments was his work in the early development of dental porcelain restorations.

Dr. Voick was a strong supporter of the Confederacy. Even though he was a non-combatant, he was a blockade runner, smuggler of drugs and medical supplies, safe house operator for Confederate soldiers and agents, rebel spy, and personal courier for Jefferson Davis.

He was also a great cartoonist for the Confederacy. He was equal to Thomas Nast who drew for the Union. One of his famous cartoons is "Caricature of Lincoln Writing the Emancipation Proclamation".

He also did sketches of Civil War scenes. One of his most famous etchings is "Prayer in Stonewall Jackson's camp". This etching shows Jackson and other soldiers at prayer. It includes drawing of Jim Lewis, Stonewall's servant

The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery will have exhibit of "The Confederate Sketches of Adalbert Voick March 30, 2012 through Jan. 21, 2013.
