The Boston Herald of May 30, 1897, published a very interesting 2-page spread for Memorial Day, entitled:

"Interesting War Stories told by Veterans, and Sketches of Generals who are Still Living"

Those pages are attached below. A great many many civil war generals were still active just 32 years after the war's end. Here is the list of surviving Confederate generals:

The list of Union generals is quite a bit longer. The post-war activities of many, but not nearly all, are sketched in the second page of articles (p.33). Both pages include many entertaining war stories.

John, I just spent an hour or so reading the first .pdf file. Very interesting between the sharks in Florida, and the donkey giving his rifle to the enemy while he mounted his horse, and the poor infantryman sleeping in a burial trench, etc. Wonderful stories. I do wonder what a "short mule race" was though.
