Abraham. The name of a slave who, on June 25, 1863, suffered only superficial injuries when blasted off a Confederate hilltop position by a Union mine dug into the southern lines during the siege of Vicksburg. Abraham, a cook, was adopted by an Iowa unit, which sequestered him in a tent and charged fellow soldiers five cents to view the miraculous man. Asked how high he had flown, Abraham calculated "bout tree mile".
